Prusament PETG Magnetite 40% is a specialized technical material with unique paramagnetic properties and high density. It is filled with fine magnetite powder, making it responsive to magnets. While it retains some printability benefits of standard PETG, it is a premium, heavy material that requires a hardened nozzle due to its abrasive nature.

Heatbed: Using a powder-coated Textured or Satin sheet is highly recommended. Enclosure is not required.

Description

Prusament PETG Magnetite 40% Grey is our in-house manufactured PETG filament blended with a high proportion (40%) of fine magnetite powder. The material behaves as a paramagnetic material, meaning printed parts can be attracted to magnets, resulting in a noticeably heavier finished product with a visually appealing matte surface.

This filament is suitable for making various electronic components, such as switches, potentiometers, induction loops, and electromagnetic shielding. In hobby use, the material can be used for various tools that can be attached to a magnet. Another use can be found in art, design, and toys. Or, it can simply work as a weight.

Because this filament is heavily filled with magnetite particles, the material is highly abrasive. You must use a hardened steel nozzle; standard brass nozzles will be rapidly worn down and ruined.

The Prusament PETG Magnetite 40% cannot gain truly magnetic properties under home conditions. In theory, it is possible to magnetize the powder. However, this would require an extremely strong magnetic field, which would require highly specialized equipment.

Best use

PETG Magnetite 40% is ideal for paramagnetic hardware components, electronic sensors, transformers, induction loops, and electromagnetic shielding. It is also suitable for functional hobby applications like magnetic boxes, lids, tools that mount to magnetic strips, magnetic puzzles, and interactive art, design, or gravity-defying levitation installations. Alternatively, it works beautifully anytime you simply need to print a ballast weight.

Temperature settings and hardware

Prusament PETG Magnetite 40% requires significantly higher thermal energy than normal PETG. Set your extruder to 270 ± 5 °C and your heated print bed to 100 ± 10 °C. Always ensure you have a hardened nozzle installed before starting your print layout.

Print surface preparation

Do not use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to clean your print sheet for this material as the chemical adhesion can become overly aggressive!

Make sure the print surface is clean. It is highly advisable to use a powder-coated Textured or Satin print sheet. To achieve the best results without over-adhesion, clean your cold print bed with a window cleaner fluid wiped with a paper towel, or wash it with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. If you must use a smooth PEI sheet, always apply a glue stick first to act as a separation layer.

Postprocessing

When post-processing Prusament PETG Magnetite 40%, parts can easily be sanded utilizing both dry and wet sanding techniques to achieve a completely flush, seamless matte finish.
